AGRICULTURE

The Pomponi estate extends over 400 hectares in the territory of San Casciano dei Bagni and of Radicofani. Part of the property is enclosed in the Natural and Cultural Artistic Park of the "Val d’Orcia", a landscape of extraordinary charm. Hills, clefts, oak forests, country houses and the cypresses characterize this territory perfumed and coloured by brooms, hedges of wild roses and of hawthorn.
Cereals are the main cultivation (hard wheat, barley and spelt) alternated with pulses, alfalfa and clover. Ten hectares are olive groves with the traditional olive varieties from Tuscany (Frantoio, Leccino, Moraiolo e Pendolino) for the production of an excellent extra virgin olive oil with the denomination of typical geographic indication (I.G.P. Toscano). Three hectares are dedicated to vineyard with the typical native varieties (Sangiovese, Procanico and Malvasia). The vineyard is cultivated according to the rules of production of the Orcia wine. All the cultivations are carried out in the respect of the environment, following the indications of the integrated agriculture. Oil and wine can be tasted and bought directly in the owner’s home. The estate is of property of the Pomponi’s family since 1852 as are many other farmhouses. Since April 2003 as well as carrying on the agricultural activity the family have decided to start renting the Podere San Lorenzo for farm holidays; this farmhouse is where many generations of farmers have lived from medieval times until today.
